Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump were among the major casualties on a dramatic second day of action at the BetVictor Northern Ireland Open in Belfast, while Stuart Bingham celebrated a significant career milestone.
The opening round continued to produce shocks at the Waterfront Hall, with several of the sport’s leading names already eliminated from the tournament.
Cheung Stuns O’Sullivan in Decider
Ka Wai Cheung produced one of the biggest victories of his career as he came from 3-1 behind to defeat seven-time World Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan 4-3.
O’Sullivan, competing in a UK tournament for the first time this season, appeared to be heading comfortably into the last 32 after breaks of 56, 138 and 72 put him 3-1 ahead.
Cheung responded brilliantly.
The Hong Kong player made an 88 to reduce his deficit before a break of 77 forced the deciding frame.
O’Sullivan was presented with an early opportunity in the decider but missed a short-range blue to a centre pocket while on six. Cheung took full advantage, producing an excellent break of 60 which ultimately proved enough to seal a memorable 4-3 victory.
The result continues a difficult spell for O’Sullivan, who reached the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open earlier this season before suffering a first-round defeat to Jiang Jun at the Shenzhen Open.
For Cheung, who regained his professional tour card through Q School after being relegated at the end of last season, the victory represents another major step as he targets a place inside the world’s top 64.
O’Donnell Claims First Victory Over Trump
The shocks continued later in the day as Martin O’Donnell defeated Judd Trump 4-3 to book his place in the last 32.
O’Donnell had lost all eight of his previous meetings with Trump but finally got the better of the world number three in Belfast.
The pair traded frames throughout the contest before Trump made a 94 to level the match at 3-3.
The deciding frame proved a more fragmented affair, but O’Donnell took control and eventually won it 87-5 to complete one of the biggest victories of his career.
The result is particularly significant given Trump’s outstanding record at the Northern Ireland Open. A four-time winner of the tournament since 2018 and runner-up in each of the previous two editions, Trump makes an unusually early exit this time around.
O’Donnell will now face Luca Brecel in the last 32.
O’Sullivan and Trump join an extraordinary list of leading players already eliminated in Belfast, with Mark Selby, Shaun Murphy, Neil Robertson, Barry Hawkins, Chris Wakelin, Xiao Guodong and Ali Carter also making opening-round exits.
Bingham Celebrates 1,000th Professional Victory
While several big names suffered disappointment, Stuart Bingham had plenty to celebrate.
The former World Champion defeated Yao Pengcheng 4-2 to register the 1,000th professional match victory of his career.
Bingham becomes only the sixth player to reach the landmark, adding another significant achievement to a career which includes World Championship and Masters titles.
Wilson Cruises Through as Gilbert Fires Three Centuries
Kyren Wilson avoided the upset trend with an impressive 4-0 victory over Ben Mertens.
The former Northern Ireland Open champion made a top break of 81 and progresses to face Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
David Gilbert was another player in outstanding form, producing a remarkable display of scoring in his 4-1 victory over Oliver Sykes.
Gilbert fired breaks of 106, 111 and 104, making three centuries during the five-frame contest.
Luca Brecel continued his improving form with a 4-1 victory over Lei Peifan, while Daniel Wells claimed an impressive 4-2 win against Barry Hawkins.
Jamie Jones defeated Chris Wakelin 4-1, Pang Junxu overcame Alfie Burden 4-2 and Jak Jones made a century during his 4-1 victory against Tom Ford.
John Higgins also safely progressed with a 4-1 victory over Liam Highfield, while Zhang Anda beat Liam Pullen 4-2.
