Kyren Wilson Battles Past Ronnie O’Sullivan to Reach Shanghai Masters Quarter-Finals
Defending Shanghai Masters champion Kyren Wilson produced a composed display to defeat Ronnie O’Sullivan 6-4 and secure his place in the quarter-finals of this year’s tournament.
Wilson Holds Off O’Sullivan Fightback
Wilson, who lifted the trophy in Shanghai 12 months ago, made an excellent start to the contest by opening up a 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval. However, seven-time World Champion O’Sullivan reminded everyone of his class after the restart, reeling off three consecutive century breaks of 100, 111 and 141 to turn the match on its head and move 4-3 in front.
The reigning champion responded impressively under pressure. Wilson levelled the match before compiling a superb 79 break to edge within one frame of victory. He then sealed the win in style with a clinical 97 in the tenth frame, setting up a quarter-final meeting with three-time World Champion Mark Williams.
Williams Awaits in the Quarter-Finals
Williams booked his place in the last eight after overcoming Chris Wakelin in a closely contested 6-5 encounter. The Welshman will now face Wilson in one of the standout ties of the quarter-finals as both former world champions continue their pursuit of the Shanghai Masters title.
Robertson Stages Stunning Comeback
Elsewhere, Neil Robertson completed one of the comebacks of the tournament after recovering from 5-2 down to defeat Xiao Guodong 6-5. Xiao thrilled the home crowd with a magnificent maximum 147 break, but Robertson dug deep, producing breaks of 115 and 62 before claiming the final four frames to progress.
The Australian will now face either Ding Junhui or Zhao Xintong in the last eight.
Trump and Lisowski Progress
World number one Judd Trump also advanced after defeating Barry Hawkins 6-4. Trump will meet either John Higgins or Jack Lisowski in the quarter-finals after Lisowski held off a spirited comeback from Zhang Anda to complete a 6-4 victory, having previously led 5-0.
Si Jiahui Sets Up Wu Yize Showdown
The final quarter-final spot was claimed by Si Jiahui, who defeated Pang Junxu 6-4. His reward is a meeting with reigning World Champion Wu Yize, who returns to competitive action for the first time since capturing his maiden world title earlier this year.
Quarter-Final Line-Up Confirmed
With the quarter-final line-up now taking shape, the Shanghai Masters continues to showcase some of the sport’s biggest names. Wilson, Williams, Robertson, Trump, Lisowski, Si Jiahui and Wu Yize all remain in contention, with the remaining quarter-final place to be decided between Ding Junhui and Zhao Xintong.
The tournament promises more high-quality snooker as the race to lift the Shanghai Masters trophy intensifies.
