Wang Xinbo Shines as Shenzhen Open Qualifiers Get Underway
The qualifying rounds for the Shenzhen Open began today in Leicester, with several standout performances as players took the first steps towards securing a place in the final stages of the tournament.
Wang Xinbo Continues to Impress
Chinese youngster Wang Xinbo was one of the day’s biggest talking points after producing an impressive 5-2 victory over Louis Heathcote. The 18-year-old, competing in his first season as a professional, compiled breaks of 52, 50, 108 and 135 to book his place in the second qualifying round, where he will face Scotland’s Scott Donaldson.
Evans and Emery Produce Comeback Victories
Former world women’s champion Reanne Evans staged an excellent comeback against Michael Larkov, recovering from 3-1 behind to claim a 5-3 victory. Evans won the final four frames of the match, producing breaks of 70 and 109 to complete the turnaround.
There was another dramatic contest involving Dylan Emery, who battled back from a 4-2 deficit to defeat Bai Yulu 5-4. Emery finished strongly, compiling breaks of 69 in each of the final two frames to secure his place in the next round.
Strong Performances Across the Field
Elsewhere, several other players progressed with convincing performances. Deng Haohui defeated Liam Pullen 5-3, while Jiang Jun overturned a 2-1 deficit to beat Panchaya Channoi 5-3, helped by a top break of 80. Yao Pengcheng continued his outstanding qualifying form this season, extending his record to seven wins from seven matches with a 5-2 success over Mitchell Mann.
Belgium enjoyed a successful day as Julien Leclercq recovered from 4-2 down to edge past Leone Crowley 5-4, while compatriot Ben Mertens eased to a comfortable 5-1 victory over Anton Kazakov, producing a highest break of 96.
One of the day’s highest-scoring displays came from Ashley Hugill, who compiled breaks of 89, 100 and 116 during his 5-3 victory over Zhao Hanyang.
White Advances After Withdrawal
Veteran Jimmy White progressed without striking a ball after opponent Ian Burns withdrew from the event. White will now take on Fan Zhengyi in the second qualifying round.
