Walden Books English Open Spot as Qualifying Delivers Drama

Ricky Walden secured his place in the final stages of the BetVictor English Open after edging out Marco Fu 4-3 in one of the standout matches of the final qualifying round.

Fu had impressed earlier in the weekend with a 4-0 victory over Hammad Miah, but Walden held his nerve in a high-quality contest to seal his place in the main stages.

There were plenty of other notable performances as Anthony McGill defeated Julien Leclercq 4-1, while Chang Bingyu edged Cheung Ka Wai 4-3 and Stan Moody battled past David Grace 4-3 despite Grace producing three century breaks.

Welsh players also enjoyed a strong showing. Daniel Wells comfortably beat Liam Graham 4-1, Liam Davies came through a deciding-frame thriller against Liu Hongyu, and Jamie Clarke won an all-Welsh clash with Ryan Day to keep his hopes alive. Jackson Page also progressed with a convincing 4-1 victory over Phil O’Kane.

Elsewhere, Sam Craigie, Tom Ford, Zak Surety, Lyu Haotian, Jordan Brown, Aaron Hill, Robbie Williams, Wang Xinbo and Gao Yang all booked their places in the next stage after impressive performances.

With qualifying now complete, the focus turns to the BetVictor English Open main venue in Brentwood, where the qualified players will join the world’s top seeds in pursuit of the title.

McGill Advances as Highfield Fires Sensational Maximum Break

Anthony McGill made a winning start to his Unibet British Open campaign, edging out Joe O’Connor 4-3 in a high-quality qualifier to book his place in the final stages.

Last year’s runner-up produced another impressive performance, compiling breaks of 115, 84, 68, 67, 54 and 53 to come through a closely fought contest.

Elsewhere, Liam Highfield stole the headlines with a brilliant 147 maximum break during his 4-1 victory over Stephen Maguire. It marks the fourth maximum break of the season and the first of Highfield’s career in British Open qualifying.

There were more impressive performances throughout the day as Yao Pengchang came from behind to defeat Ng On Yee 4-2, while Welsh duo Daniel Wells and Jamie Jones both secured qualification with century breaks. Fellow Welshman Liam Davies also impressed, making four breaks over 50 in a 4-2 win over Craig Steadman.

Bai Yulu claimed her first victory of the season with a 4-1 success over Sahil Nayyar, while Sean O’Sullivan defeated Jimmy White and Ali Carter completed a commanding 4-0 win over Stuart Carrington.

The race for places in the British Open has now been confirmed, with plenty more exciting action still to come from Cheltenham commencing on Monday 31st August.

Vafaei Completes Stunning Comeback to Reach Shenzhen Open Final Stages 🇨🇳

Hossein Vafaei completed a superb comeback to book his place in the final stages of the Shenzhen Open, recovering from 4-1 down to edge Antoni Kowalski 5-4.

Kowalski looked set for victory after impressive breaks of 94, 69 and 93 put him within one frame of the finish line. However, Vafaei responded in style, reeling off the final four frames with superb contributions of 134, 69 and 80 to seal an outstanding turnaround.

Elsewhere, Elliot Slessor came through a thrilling encounter against Chang Bingyu, taking the deciding frame with a century break to secure a 5-4 victory. Despite the defeat, Chang produced a remarkable scoring display with breaks of 130, 142 and 131.

Ali Carter enjoyed a comfortable 5-1 win over He Guoqiang, making two century breaks of 104 along the way, while Stephen Maguire defeated Lan Yuhao 5-3 to progress. Gary Wilson also advanced with a convincing 5-2 victory over Luo Zetao.

🚨 Maximum Magic from Chang Bingyu! 🎱🔥

Chang Bingyu produced a sensational display in the Shenzhen Open qualifiers, firing a stunning 147 maximum break during his dominant 5-0 victory over Chatchapong Nasa.

The Chinese star was in irresistible form, adding breaks of 109, 134, 83 and 135 to complete the win in just 57 minutes, conceding only 24 points throughout the match.

It marks the third maximum break of Chang’s career and the 244th official 147 in snooker history. Having also made maximums during the UK Championship and World Championship qualifiers last season, he’s now recorded three of the last 12 official 147s and is in contention for the tournament’s £5,000 highest break prize.

Chang will now take on Elliot Slessor for a place in the final stages of the Shenzhen Open this September.

Elsewhere, Anthony McGill edged past Jordan Brown 5-4, Matthew Selt defeated Steven Hallworth 5-1 with a top break of 108, Ricky Walden celebrated his 400th career century in a 5-2 win over Cheung Ka Wai, while Liam Highfield compiled a superb 131 in his 5-2 victory over Long Zehuang.

🇨🇳 Shenzhen Open Qualifiers

Iulian Boiko continued his impressive start to the new season with a superb comeback victory, recovering from 2-0 down to defeat Stan Moody 5-2 and book his place in the final qualifying round.

The 20-year-old Ukrainian has been in excellent form, adding to his strong performances in the China Open qualifiers and Championship League. After a 5-0 win over Phil O’Kane in the opening round, Boiko reeled off five consecutive frames against Moody, compiling top breaks of 59 and 54. He now faces Yuan Sijun on Wednesday, with a place in September’s final stages in China up for grabs.

Elsewhere, Fan Zhengyi produced breaks of 119, 73, 69 and 63 in a convincing 5-1 win over Jimmy White, while Marco Fu made century breaks of 124 and 117 in a 5-1 victory over Onyee Ng. Luca Brecel also impressed with two centuries in a 5-3 success against Julien Leclercq.

Other notable winners included Antoni Kowalski, Ben Mertens, Chatchapong Nasa and Deng Haohui as the Shenzhen Open qualifiers continue through to Wednesday.
